Specialist colorectal, proctological, robotic and general surgical care, with a focus on colorectal cancer, advanced cancer surgery and complex colorectal conditions.
A/Prof Helen Mohan is a Melbourne based colorectal and robotic surgeon providing personalised care for patients with colorectal and anal cancer, complex colorectal conditions and general surgical concerns.
With experience spanning robotic and minimally invasive surgery, pelvic exenteration, cytoreduction and HIPEC, advanced cancer treatment and general colorectal surgery, Helen combines specialist surgical expertise with a thoughtful and patient-centred approach to care.
Her practice also includes proctology, pilonidal disease, colonoscopy and selected general surgery.
Conditions Treated
A/Prof Helen Mohan provides assessment and treatment across a broad range of colorectal and general surgical conditions, with particular expertise in colorectal cancer, robotic surgery, pelvic exenteration, cytoreduction, HIPEC and complex cancer care.
-
Helen provides specialist assessment and surgical management for cancers affecting the colon, rectum and anus. Treatment varies according to the type, location and stage of the cancer, as well as the wider treatment required.
Surgery is an important part of treatment for many colon and rectal cancers and may involve minimally invasive or robotic techniques where appropriate.
Anal cancer is distinct from cancers of the colon and rectum and is managed differently. Surgery may be required in selected circumstances, including for persistent or recurrent disease following other treatments.
-
Helen has a particular interest in the management of advanced and complex colorectal cancer, including cancers that have returned, involve surrounding structures or require more extensive surgery.
Her practice includes the management of locally advanced and recurrent colorectal cancer, peritoneal disease and complex pelvic cancers.
Each case is considered individually, with a focus on understanding the available treatment options and determining the most appropriate approach for the patient.
-
Helen treats a broad range of benign conditions affecting the colon, rectum and anus, from common concerns through to conditions requiring specialist surgical management.
These include diverticular disease, haemorrhoids, anal fissures and anal fistulas, as well as other colorectal and proctological conditions.
Treatment depends on the underlying condition and its impact on the individual. Where surgery is not immediately required, Helen can also discuss conservative or non-operative approaches and help patients understand when further treatment may be appropriate.
-
Pilonidal disease occurs when a small sinus or cavity develops in the skin, most commonly in the cleft between the buttocks. It can cause recurrent pain, swelling, discharge or infection, and may significantly interfere with day-to-day life.
Helen provides assessment and treatment for both new and recurrent pilonidal disease, including laser approaches where appropriate.
-
Helen provides assessment and surgical care for a range of general surgical conditions, including hernias.
Her general surgical practice complements her colorectal work and may include the assessment and treatment of abdominal wall and groin hernias, as well as other conditions requiring surgical review.
Treatment depends on the condition, symptoms and individual clinical circumstances, with surgery considered where appropriate.
-
Helen performs colonoscopies for the investigation, diagnosis and monitoring of conditions affecting the colon and rectum.
A colonoscopy allows the lining of the large bowel to be examined and may be recommended to investigate symptoms such as rectal bleeding or changes in bowel habits, as part of bowel cancer screening or surveillance, or to follow up previous bowel conditions or polyps.
During the procedure, abnormalities can be identified and biopsies or polyps may be removed where appropriate. Helen will discuss the reason for the procedure, preparation and any required follow-up with each patient.
